How We Research and Test

HedgeLens uses explicit evidence labels so a retailer specification can never silently become a first-hand finding.

Evidence levels

Manufacturer-data research

We have checked the exact model against a primary manufacturer or authorised retailer source. We may analyse suitability, but we have not used the unit.

Editorial shortlist

The product appears relevant after source review and is queued for deeper comparison or acquisition. This is not a performance award.

Hands-on tested

The exact unit has completed the declared protocol. The record must contain the firmware or model identity, test dates, tester, protocol version and retained original evidence.

Core protocol

1. Buy or transparently receive the exact retail unit.
2. Record model, firmware, accessories and commercial relationship.
3. Install it in a realistic UK garden position without disturbing active wildlife.
4. Log setup, reconnection, notifications and storage behaviour.
5. Compare daylight detail, night exposure, trigger capture and false alerts.
6. Track power under declared settings and weather.
7. Publish limitations, failures and manufacturer claims separately.

Updates

Price and source dates are stored per product. Material changes are added to the page history. A test label is removed or qualified when a firmware or hardware revision makes the retained evidence no longer representative.

Source hierarchy

1. Current manufacturer manual, technical page or regulatory document.
2. Authorised UK retailer listing for price, bundle and availability.
3. Official bodies for wildlife, privacy and safety guidance.
4. Independent secondary material used only for context or questions to investigate.

Conflicts are not averaged. The page states the discrepancy, records the check date and prefers the source closest to the fact. A product page links to its primary source and identifies unverified merchant claims.

Hands-on protocol before any rating

The protocol records identity and firmware; setup and recovery; daylight and night footage; trigger capture and false events; storage and exports; notifications; power under declared settings; weather observations; privacy controls; and any welfare constraints. Comparative conclusions require equivalent settings and positions. A supplied sample is disclosed and does not guarantee coverage.

What HedgeLens does not claim

Research-only records do not receive star ratings, measured runtime, identification accuracy or a best-overall award. Illustrations are visibly labelled and excluded from Product schema as product photography. Price snapshots expire rather than masquerading as live prices.

Review and freshness

Material pages carry a reviewed date. Product sources and prices have separate checked dates. Firmware, bundle or hardware revisions can invalidate previous findings; affected language is qualified or removed until retested. Readers can challenge facts through the corrections process.

Accessibility and visual evidence

Original test media must retain enough context to show the setup, while public images need meaningful alternative text and must not expose neighbouring private space. Decorative illustrations are labelled as illustrations. Performance tables use text labels rather than colour alone, and limitations remain visible beside commercial calls to action.

From research to recommendation

A shortlist is a research queue, not a winner list. A recommendation requires evidence relevant to the stated use case and cannot be extrapolated across a different firmware, bundle or camera family. Until equivalent hands-on data exists, HedgeLens publishes a source-checked comparison and lets readers inspect the trade-offs rather than manufacturing a numerical hierarchy.
