Wi-Fi labels tell you which radio a camera contains, not whether it will work at the end of your garden. This guide shows how to test the route before buying.

Why quoted range rarely matches a garden

Walls, foil-backed insulation, double glazing, sheds, foliage and neighbouring networks all reduce usable range. A camera mounted low inside a wooden box can have a different connection from a phone held at chest height. Treat an open-air range as a laboratory maximum.

2.4GHz versus 5GHz

2.4GHz generally reaches farther and passes through obstacles better, while 5GHz can provide more capacity over a shorter, cleaner path. Dual-band support is useful, but the router, mesh system and onboarding app must also handle the chosen band correctly.

A five-minute pre-purchase test

  1. Stand a phone at the planned camera height and orientation.
  2. Check signal at the busiest time of day.
  3. Close the window or door that will be closed in normal use.
  4. Test a video call or sustained upload, not only the Wi-Fi icon.
  5. Repeat after rain or when foliage is dense if the margin is small.

Ways to improve a weak route

Move an existing mesh node toward the garden-facing wall, use wired backhaul where practical, or choose a local-recording trail camera. Do not put a consumer access point outdoors unless its enclosure and electrical installation are suitable.

A Wi-Fi icon at the mounting point is not a pass. Test a sustained upload at the final height, with doors closed and the camera side of the garden in its normal condition. If the route has little margin, choose local recording or improve the network before buying.

Measure the route, not just the signal bars

Record the test position, time, device and result so it can be repeated. A useful check includes upload stability because cameras send footage away from the garden. Run at least three tests: beside the router, at the inside face of the garden wall, and at the intended camera point. A sharp fall at the wall suggests the building fabric is the main constraint; a gradual decline points to distance and obstructions.

  • Exact mounting height and orientation.
  • Router or mesh node used and whether backhaul is wired.
  • 2.4GHz and 5GHz results where both are supported.
  • Upload test with the normal door or window closed.
  • A fallback plan for local recording if reconnection fails.

Do not confuse coverage with camera reliability

A phone and camera can have different aerials and radio firmware. Treat the phone test as screening, then bench-test the exact camera before drilling or placing it near wildlife. Confirm that recording continues during broadband loss and that the camera reconnects after the router restarts. For a local-hotspot camera, range only needs to support nearby setup or downloads; it does not provide remote access through the home internet.
